Mount Godaisan

13 of 14 in attractions in Kochi

Godaisan, a serene mountain east of Kochi’s downtown, was named after a sacred Chinese mountain by Buddhist priests who traveled from China. These priests also founded Chikurinji Temple, an important stop on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Number 31 of the 88 temples along the pilgrimage route, Chikurinji Temple is not only a place of worship but also a well-regarded center of learning. Visitors are drawn to its tranquil atmosphere, historic significance, and stunning five-storied pagoda. Inside the treasure hall, rare Buddhist statues and scrolls tell the story of the temple’s deep-rooted history.

Near Chikurinji Temple, Makino Botanical Garden offers a refreshing natural escape. Named after the renowned botanist Dr. Makino Tomitaro, the garden features scenic walking paths, lush greenery, a greenhouse, and museum halls dedicated to plant studies. With its blend of spiritual heritage and natural beauty, Godaisan is a must-visit for travelers seeking a peaceful and enriching experience in Kochi.
