Dogo Onsen Honkan (道後温泉本館, Dōgo Onsen Honkan), the iconic heart of Japan’s oldest hot spring, has been welcoming guests since 1894. This charming wooden bathhouse, a labyrinth of stairways and serene tatami rooms, is believed to have inspired Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. Visitors can enjoy two gender-separated stone baths—Kami no Yu (Bath of the Gods) and Tama no Yu (Bath of the Spirits)—each offering a tranquil, old-fashioned bathing experience. On the second and third floors, spacious communal and private rooms provide a perfect retreat for relaxation and refreshments, making every visit a step back in time.

The Honkan holds a rich imperial history, with Yushinden, an exclusive section built for the Imperial Family in 1899, now open for guided tours. The second floor also features a small exhibition displaying historical documents, including traditional wooden bath tickets. Keep an eye out for statues and paintings of a heron, symbolizing the legend of a wounded bird healed by the therapeutic waters of Dogo Onsen. Whether for its cultural charm, luxurious bathing, or historical depth, Dogo Onsen Honkan offers an unforgettable experience of Japan’s timeless bathing tradition.
