Dogo Onsen
Dogo Onsen (道後温泉, Dōgo Onsen) is one of Japan’s oldest and most famous hot springs, located just east of central Matsuyama. The area is renowned for its beautiful Dogo Onsen Honkan, a historic wooden bathhouse dating back to 1894. Its maze-like interior, filled with stairways, rooms, and bathers, is a must-see. Visitors often recognize it as the inspiration for the popular animated film “Spirited Away” by Miyazaki. Alongside this iconic bathhouse, Dogo Onsen also features other attractions such as Asuka no Yu, temples, shrines, and Dogo Park.
The Dogo Onsen area offers a charming experience for tourists. In addition to its historic baths, visitors can stroll around the shopping arcade, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and explore the Masaoka Shiki Museum, dedicated to one of Matsuyama’s most famous figures. Guests staying in the many ryokan often wander the streets in their yukata, adding to the authentic atmosphere of this onsen town.
