Garyu Sanso Villa
Garyu Sanso, located by the river east of Ozu’s old town, is a beautiful traditional villa built in 1907. Designed over ten years and constructed by 9,000 artisans, it draws inspiration from imperial villas in Kyoto, like Katsura Rikyu. The main building, Garyu-in, features a large wooden thatched-roof house, with rooms showcasing unique designs, such as intricately carved transoms, coffered ceilings, and a circular window symbolizing a full moon surrounded by clouds. The peaceful garden behind Garyu-in has a stone path and a small tea house, Chishi-an, built from the original bathroom. The Furo-an house, elevated above Hijikawa River, offers stunning views and a curved ceiling reflecting the moon on the water.
The villa’s beauty lies in its subtle, yet remarkable design. The garden’s natural elements and architectural harmony make it a serene spot. Furo-an, the thatched-roof house on stilts, is especially popular among photographers. Though visitors can’t experience the moonlit view at night, the peaceful atmosphere and occasional tea service make Garyu Sanso a delightful visit. With its historical significance and artistic features, this villa provides an excellent escape into nature and Japanese tradition.
