Kanamaruza Theater
Kanamaruza Theater (金丸座), built in 1835 in Kotohira, is Japan's oldest surviving kabuki playhouse. It continues to host kabuki performances, often featuring some of the country’s most renowned kabuki stars. Even when there are no shows, visitors are welcome to explore the theater. You can wander through the audience hall, stage, and dressing rooms, immersing yourself in the rich history of the theater.
A highlight is the basement, where visitors can witness the fascinating human-powered rotating stage and trapdoors that add drama to kabuki performances. These unique features, used by actors for dramatic entrances and exits, offer a glimpse into the technical marvels of traditional kabuki theater. Kanamaruza is a must-see for anyone interested in Japan’s theatrical heritage.
