Tokugawa Art Museum

26 of 35 in attractions in Nagoya

The Tokugawa Art Museum (徳川美術館, Tokugawa Bijutsukan) in Nagoya preserves the rich history of the Owari Tokugawa family, one of the three major branches of the Tokugawa clan during the Edo Period (1603-1868). Situated on the grounds of their former residence, the museum houses an impressive collection of samurai armor, swords, tea utensils, noh masks, costumes, and historical scrolls and maps, providing a fascinating glimpse into Japan's feudal past.

Adjacent to the museum, Tokugawa-en is a tranquil Japanese garden featuring a large pond and beautiful walking trails. Originally part of the local lords' retirement residence, it was restored after World War II and reopened to the public in 2004. The garden is especially stunning in spring and autumn, when the Peony and Iris gardens bloom, offering a perfect blend of history and nature.
