Meiji Mura
Meiji Mura (明治村, meaning "Meiji Village") is one of Japan’s top open-air museums, showcasing over 60 historical buildings from the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Located in Inuyama, just an hour outside of Nagoya, this expansive museum is set within a beautiful wooded area by Iruka Pond. The Meiji period marked Japan’s transition from feudalism to modernization, with its architecture heavily influenced by Western styles. Visitors can spend half a day exploring the museum’s vast grounds, experiencing the rich history and culture of the era.
Among the museum’s treasures are famous structures like the entrance hall of Tokyo’s old Imperial Hotel and St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral in Kyoto. The park features a variety of restored buildings, including the former Kanazawa Prison, a Sapporo telephone exchange, and schools, hospitals, and breweries. Visitors can also enjoy a tram ride, steam locomotive, or rent Meiji Period outfits to fully immerse themselves in the experience. There are cafes, candy stores, and game stalls where visitors can relax and enjoy a unique historical atmosphere.
