Urakuen Garden

3 of 3 in attractions in Inuyama

Urakuen (有楽苑) is a beautiful Japanese garden located just east of Inuyama Castle. This tranquil garden is home to Joan, one of Japan's most famous teahouses, a designated national treasure. Originally built in 1618 as part of a temple complex in Kyoto, Joan was constructed by Oda Uraku, the younger brother of the renowned Oda Nobunaga and a disciple of Sen-no-Rikyu, Japan’s tea ceremony master. In 1972, the teahouse was moved to Urakuen, where visitors can still admire it today.

The garden features not only Joan, but also the Shodenin Shoin, a study room originally built alongside the teahouse. The peaceful garden grounds also include a bamboo grove and the Koan teahouse, where guests can enjoy traditional tea and sweets. The best time to visit is during the autumn, when the garden is transformed into a stunning display of colors.
