Japan Ukiyoe Museum
The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum (日本浮世絵博物館, Nihon Ukiyo-e Hakubutsukan) in Matsumoto is home to one of the world's largest private collections of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). This impressive collection, which started over 300 years ago by wealthy merchant Sakai Yoshiaki, has grown to more than 100,000 pieces. Sakai’s descendants have continued to add to the collection, making it an incredible resource for ukiyo-e enthusiasts.
While the museum building is relatively small compared to the vast collection, it still showcases a rich selection of art. Originally built as a storage space, it now displays a variety of works, though only a portion of the collection is exhibited at any given time. The museum offers brief English descriptions of the artwork, allowing visitors to appreciate the artistry and history of ukiyo-e.
