Naruto Whirlpools

2 of 2 in attractions in Naruto

The Naruto Whirlpools (鳴門の渦潮, Naruto no Uzushio) are a natural wonder located along the Shikoku coast, created by the powerful tidal currents of the Naruto Strait. These whirlpools, which occur roughly every six hours, are most visible during the morning and afternoon. The size of the whirlpools varies with the intensity of the tides, with the largest appearing during spring tides when the sun, earth, and moon align. On good days, whirlpools can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. Visitors can check schedules to plan their visit for the best viewing opportunities.

To experience the whirlpools, sightseeing cruises are the best option, as boats get close to the action. Uzushio Kisen offers smaller boats, while Uzushio Kankosen operates larger boats with glass-bottom windows for a unique view. For a higher vantage point, the “Wonder Naruto” tour boat provides excellent views from its upper deck. Alternatively, the Uzu no Michi walkway under Onaruto Bridge offers spectacular views through glass windows set in the floor. Naruto Park has walking trails, observatories like Senjojiki, and the Onaruto Bridge Museum for those interested in learning about the area’s history.
