Ryozenji Temple

3 of 3 in attractions in Naruto

Ryozenji Temple (霊山寺, Ryōzenji) is the first stop on the famous Shikoku Pilgrimage, a sacred journey to 88 temples linked to Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. This journey, which spans two months and covers all four prefectures of Shikoku, is a deeply spiritual and challenging experience. Ryozenji, located at the temple's start and end, is a popular place for pilgrims to begin their pilgrimage or conclude their journey.

As the closest temple to Koyasan, the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism and home to Kobo Daishi’s “eternal meditation,” Ryozenji holds great significance. Pilgrims can purchase essential items like white robes, woven hats, and walking sticks to support them on their journey. A visit to this temple marks the beginning or end of an important spiritual journey.
