Osaka Castle
Osaka Castle (大阪城, Ōsakajō) was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the site of the former Ishiyama Honganji Temple. He intended the castle to be the center of a unified Japan under his rule. However, after Hideyoshi's death, the castle was destroyed by Tokugawa forces in 1615, and the Toyotomi lineage ended. Although rebuilt in the 1620s, the main tower was lost to a fire in 1665. The current tower was reconstructed in 1931 and survived the war.
The castle tower is now modern, featuring a museum and an elevator for accessibility. It is surrounded by stone walls, moats, and the Nishinomaru Garden, which has 600 cherry trees. Osaka Castle Park spans two square kilometers and includes sports facilities, Osakajo Hall, and a shrine to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring.
