Komyozenji Temple

Recommended
2 of 5 in attractions in Dazaifu

Komyozenji (光明禅寺) is a beautiful Zen temple in Dazaifu, just south of the famous Tenmangu Shrine. Founded in the Kamakura Period, this temple belongs to the Tofukuji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. The temple's main attraction is its stunning Japanese gardens, featuring two rock gardens. The front garden, smaller in size, features rocks arranged to form the character for "light." The rear garden is larger, incorporating plants and stones that represent land and water, with the maple trees making it especially beautiful in autumn.
