Inner Shrine (Naiku)

Best of Japan
1 of 1 in attractions in Ise Shima

The Inner Shrine (内宮, Naikū) in Ise City, formally known as Kotai Jingu, is Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun Goddess. With a history spanning over 2000 years, its architecture remains untouched by mainland influences, reflecting ancient Japanese traditions.

The shrine is rebuilt every 20 years, symbolizing renewal, with the next rebuilding scheduled for 2033. Visitors begin their journey crossing the wooden Uji Bridge, surrounded by serene forest paths, leading to the main sanctuary. The sacred grounds offer purification rituals, auxiliary shrines, and the timeless simplicity of Shinto design.
