Gas-san

Gas-san (月山) is the highest peak of the Dewa Sanzan mountains, standing at 1984 meters above sea level. Accessible only in summer due to heavy snowfall, it attracts pilgrims and hikers who ascend to its mountaintop shrine. The trail is not overly steep, but its rocky, exposed nature can make the hike challenging. Along the way, you’ll pass through marshlands and wildflower fields, offering breathtaking views. Pilgrims visiting Gas-san traditionally follow the route from Haguro-san (birth) to Yudono-san (rebirth), symbolizing the cycle of life.

For those not seeking to summit, a circular trail from the 8th Station offers an easier 30-minute hike with beautiful views. At the shrine, visitors take part in a short purification ritual. The hike to the top takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, while the descent to Yudono-san lasts about 2.5 hours. The experience is both physically challenging and spiritually enriching, with a chance to connect with nature and tradition.
