Osorezan (Mount Osore)

Best of Japan
1 of 1 in attractions in Shimokita Hanto

Mount Osorezan (恐山), one of Japan's three most sacred sites, is a remote destination known for its volcanic landscape and spiritual significance. Discovered over 1000 years ago, it is home to Bodaiji Temple and features sulfur-rich terrain, steaming vents, and the striking Lake Usori. The area is considered the gateway to the afterlife, with the Sanzu no Kawa river symbolizing the crossing of souls.

Visitors can experience spiritual practices during the annual festival and stay at the temple's modern accommodations. With walking paths and a peaceful environment, Osorezan offers a unique, serene atmosphere to reflect and explore.
