Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion)
Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion), or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto's most stunning landmarks. Located in northern Kyoto, its top two floors are entirely covered in gold leaf, reflecting beautifully in the surrounding pond. Once the retirement villa of shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was transformed into a Zen temple after his death in 1408. The temple embodies Kitayama culture and features unique architectural styles on each floor. Despite its turbulent history, including being rebuilt after a fire in 1950, it stands as a symbol of timeless beauty and resilience.
Visitors can admire Kinkakuji's shimmering reflection from across the pond and stroll through the meticulously maintained gardens, unchanged since Yoshimitsu’s era. Along the way, discover Anmintaku Pond, statues for good fortune, and the Sekkatei Teahouse. Before leaving, enjoy matcha tea at the tea garden or visit Fudo Hall to see a historic statue of Fudo Myoo. This unforgettable destination showcases Kyoto's rich culture and history.
