Yamadera Temple

Highly Recommended
1 of 1 in attractions in Yamagata City

Yamadera (山寺), also known as Risshakuji, is a breathtaking temple nestled in the mountains northeast of Yamagata City. Founded in 860 by the Tendai sect, its scenic grounds offer panoramic views of the valley below. Visitors can explore the historic Konponchudo Hall at the mountain's base, home to a flame said to have burned since the temple's founding. Renowned poet Basho immortalized the temple’s tranquility in one of his famous haikus, with his poem and statue now displayed on-site.

The ascent to the upper temple grounds features 1000 stone steps through a serene forest, dotted with lanterns and statues. Along the way, visitors pass the impressive Niomon Gate and reach Godaido Hall, an observation deck with stunning valley views. A visit to Yamadera promises natural beauty, history, and a spiritual journey.
