Muroji Temple
Muroji Temple (室生寺, Murōji), located in the mountains east of Sakurai City, offers a serene and historical experience. Surrounded by dense forest, stone steps connect the various temple buildings, blending harmoniously with nature. Muroji dates back to the 8th century and is known for its old wooden structures, including the Kondo Hall, Mirokudo Hall, and Kanjodo Hall. The temple is also famous as "Women's Koyasan," as it allowed both men and women to enter, unlike Koyasan, which restricted entry to men.
Muroji is an isolated and peaceful retreat with a rich history. The temple’s main cluster of buildings is located near the Niomon Gate. The five-story pagoda, built in the 8th century, is the oldest structure and offers impressive views after a steep hike. The Okunoin area, located further up the mountain, offers a more secluded part of the temple, requiring a bit of effort to reach, but rewarding visitors with a sense of spiritual solitude.
