Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle (松本城, Matsumotojō) is one of Japan's most beautiful and well-preserved original castles. Built between 1592 and 1614, this iconic structure stands out for its impressive design, featuring both a secondary donjon and a turret attached to its main keep. The unique black wainscoting adds to its majestic presence. Unlike many castles rebuilt in ferro-concrete, Matsumoto Castle retains its original wooden interior, providing an authentic historical experience.
The castle’s steep wooden stairs, arrow slits, and observation deck offer a glimpse into its past as a fortress. In spring, it becomes a popular cherry blossom spot, with hundreds of Somei Yoshino cherry trees lining the outer moat. Visitors flock to the castle grounds to enjoy the stunning views of the blooms in mid-April, making it a serene place to explore while immersed in history and natural beauty.
