Matsuyama Castle
Matsuyama Castle (松山城, Matsuyamajō) is located on a steep mountain north of Takahashi, making it the oldest surviving castle in Japan. Built in 1240, it is also the highest of Japan’s twelve original castles, standing at 430 meters above sea level. The castle’s mountaintop location made it a strong defensive fortress, designed to be difficult to attack. Matsuyama Castle remains remarkably intact, providing a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past.
Visitors must hike 20 minutes from the parking lot to reach the castle keep, passing through defense walls and enjoying views of the town along the way. The castle's keep, with only two stories, is smaller than most. Inside, displays explain the castle’s history and preservation efforts. In the colder months, the castle is often surrounded by clouds, and a nearby observation deck offers the chance to see the castle floating above the sea of clouds, offering a stunning and unique view.
