Takeda Castle is about 70 kilometers north of Himeji, near Takeda Station on the JR Bantan Line. From the station, two steep nature trails lead up to the castle in about 40 minutes, though they can be slippery after rain.
Outside winter, the Tenku Bus runs hourly from Takeda Station to the Takedajo-seki bus stop (20 minutes, 260 yen), followed by a 20-minute walk to the castle entrance. A taxi from the station to the trailhead near the bus stop takes 15 minutes (about 2000 yen) and also leaves a 20-minute walk to the entrance.

Takeda Castle Ruins
Takeda Castle (竹田城跡, Takedajō-seki), in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, is famously known as the "castle floating in the sky." Perched atop a mountain, the castle appears to float on a sea of clouds during misty autumn mornings, offering a breathtaking spectacle. Originally built in 1411, it played a role in significant historical events before being abandoned after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The ruins were restored in the late 20th century, preserving its stone foundations and making it a beloved tourist destination.
Visitors can explore the castle's marked walking trails, which reveal its layout and stunning views of the surrounding mountains and town. The best time to experience the floating effect is at sunrise in October or November, with the most popular viewpoint being Ritsuunkyo. Accessible by car and a short hike, this spot provides incredible views of the sea of clouds. Visitors contribute a small fee to preserve this magical site.
