Kanazawa Castle

Recommended
1 of 1 in attractions in Kanazawa

Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawajō) was the residence of the Maeda Clan, rulers of Kaga, from 1583 until the end of the Edo Period. Despite suffering several fires, most recently in 1881, some original structures have been preserved, including the Ishikawa-mon Gate, which faces Kenrokuen Garden. Kanazawa University occupied the site for decades, but recent reconstruction projects have brought the castle's former glory back to life.

The Gojukken Nagaya Storehouse, the Hishi and Tsuzuki Yagura turrets, and other gates like Kahoku-mon and Nezumita-mon have been rebuilt. These restored structures offer insight into traditional carpentry and the castle’s history. The Gyokuseninmaru Garden, a tranquil space with a pond, was also reconstructed and is open to visitors for free.
