Ueno Castle

3 of 7 in attractions in Iga Ueno

Ueno Castle (伊賀上野城, Iga Uenojō) was originally built in the late 16th century and later expanded. It served as the seat of local lords during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The castle tower was destroyed by a storm less than 50 years later but was reconstructed in 1935 with funds from a local resident.

Unlike many other Japanese castles, Ueno Castle was rebuilt using only wood, preserving its original look and atmosphere. The western stone walls are the tallest in Japan, standing at an impressive 30 meters.
