Nakijin Castle

3 of 3 in attractions in Okinawa Island

The Nakijin Castle Ruins (今帰仁城跡, Nakijinjōato) are a stunning historical site on Okinawa's Motobu Peninsula. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, these ruins offer a glimpse into the Ryukyu Kingdom's rich past. Surrounded by lush forests, the serene atmosphere sets Nakijin Castle apart from other Okinawan castles. Built in the late 1200s, it served as the stronghold of the Hokuzan king during the Sanzan Period, a time when Okinawa was divided into three kingdoms. The castle was eventually overtaken by Chuzan forces, leading to the unification of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Next to the castle, the Nakijin Village History and Culture Center showcases artifacts found at the site, including Chinese pottery, coins, and historical documents. Visitors can also learn about the daily life and culture of Nakijin Village through its engaging exhibits. A visit to the ruins and the museum provides an enriching experience of Okinawa’s heritage.
