Maruoka Castle
Maruoka Castle (丸岡城, Maruokajō), also known as "Mist Castle," is one of Japan's twelve original castles with an intact wooden keep. Built in the early 1600s, this three-story structure is steeped in legend, with its mist said to protect it from enemies. Situated atop a small hill north of Fukui City, the castle offers visitors a unique experience with its steep wooden stairs and ropes to aid in the climb. The reward is breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding plains.
The castle grounds have transformed into a beautiful public park with over 400 cherry trees. During early to mid-April, the cherry blossoms create a stunning scene, complemented by evening illuminations and an annual festival. A small museum showcases artifacts from the castle's history, making Maruoka Castle a blend of culture, history, and natural beauty.
