Aoba Castle

1 of 1 in attractions in Sendai

Aoba Castle (青葉城, Aobajō), built in 1600 by the legendary feudal lord Date Masamune, stands atop Mount Aoba, 100 meters above Sendai. Though time and history have left only the castle's stone walls and a guard tower, the site offers breathtaking views of the city below. Visitors can explore a museum showcasing Edo-period models, castle artifacts, and an immersive VR experience that brings the historic grounds to life. A statue of Masamune on horseback adds to the site's charm.

Nearby, Gokoku Shrine honors Japan's modern military history, while the Sendai City Museum features relics of the Date clan. A short walk leads to Yagiyama Zoo, home to local wildlife, and the Yagiyama Benyland amusement park, providing fun for visitors of all ages. Aoba Castle is a blend of history, culture, and family-friendly attractions.
