Honmaru Goten (Kawagoe Castle)

1 of 1 in attractions in Kawagoe

Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿), the only surviving building of Kawagoe Castle, was the palace where the lord resided and held offices. Originally built in 1457, Kawagoe Castle became an important strategic point for trade and defense during the Edo Period. Tokugawa Ieyasu placed loyal lords at the castle, and 21 different lords ruled there.

The current structure, added in 1848, showcases tatami rooms, a beautiful garden, and cultural heritage displays. Visitors can imagine feudal discussions by sitting with models of a lord and his vassals in the palace's rooms.
