Kokura Castle
Kokura Castle (小倉城) was built in 1602 during the Edo Period and stands out with its traditional design, contrasting with the surrounding modern shopping area. After being destroyed by fire in 1866, the current tower was reconstructed in 1959 using ferro-concrete. Located in Katsuyama Park, the castle grounds are a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, typically in bloom in early April. Inside the castle, visitors can explore local history through exhibits, a small theater, and enjoy panoramic views from the top floor.
The grounds also feature a small Japanese garden with a pond, offering beautiful views of the castle. The garden, opened in 1998, can be seen from a Shoin-style building, where tatami rooms are arranged to show the status of their occupants. Kokura Castle blends history with modern attractions, making it a unique destination for both culture and relaxation.
