Takamatsu Castle

1 of 1 in attractions in Takamatsu

Takamatsu Castle (高松城), also known as Tamamo Castle, was built in 1590 by the Ikoma Clan near the Seto Inland Sea. Unique for its saltwater moats, the castle is one of the few built along a waterfront. After the Ikoma Clan ruled for 54 years, the Matsudaira Clan, relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, took control for the rest of the Edo Period.

Today, while the original keep was destroyed, restoration efforts have begun, including the completion of the castle tower’s foundation in 2013. Visitors can explore the moats, walls, and the Asahimon Gate, along with two standing turrets. The Hiunkaku building, constructed in 1917, now serves as an exhibition space and community hall.
