Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺, Ryōanji) is home to Japan's most famous rock garden, dating back to 1450. Once an aristocrat’s villa, it was transformed into a Zen temple and is part of the Myoshinji school. The garden, known for its 15 rocks surrounded by moss and pebbles, has an unclear design and meaning. Some believe it symbolizes a tiger crossing a pond, while others see infinity.

The temple’s Hojo building offers more than just the garden. It features paintings, smaller gardens, and a Zen inscription in one of the ponds. The spacious park also has a pond, shrine, walking trails, and a restaurant specializing in Yudofu, Kyoto’s boiled tofu dish, where visitors can enjoy meals in a traditional Japanese setting.
