Kofukuji Temple
Kofukuji (興福寺, Kōfukuji), once the family temple of the powerful Fujiwara clan, is a historic gem in Nara, established in 710 alongside the ancient capital. At its peak, the temple housed over 150 buildings. Today, its five-storied pagoda, standing 50 meters tall, serves as a symbol of Nara and Japan’s second tallest wooden pagoda. Though the pagodas can’t be entered, the temple grounds are free to explore, while the Central Golden Hall, Eastern Golden Hall, and National Treasure Museum require a ticket.
The Central Golden Hall, reconstructed in its original grandeur and reopened in 2018, showcases the temple's rich heritage. Nearby, the Eastern Golden Hall features the Yakushi Buddha statue, and the museum displays treasures like the renowned Ashura Statue. Visitors can also admire the ancient Northern and Southern Octagonal Halls, adding to the temple’s timeless allure.
