Kyoto Railway Museum
The Kyoto Railway Museum (京都鉄道博物館), opened in 2016 by JR West, is one of Japan's top railway museums. Located just a 20-minute walk from Kyoto Station, it showcases over 50 retired trains, including steam locomotives, electric trains, and shinkansen. Visitors can explore the inner workings of freight locomotives, enjoy interactive exhibits, and try train simulators. The museum also features a large diorama and stunning views of passing trains.
The museum's roundhouse houses Japan's largest collection of preserved steam locomotives, with real-time train maintenance visible. For an extra 300 yen, take a steam-powered train ride. The historic Nijo Station Building, relocated from 1904, adds to the museum's charm.
