Gion, Kyoto's iconic geisha district, lies between Yasaka Shrine and the Kamo River. Known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, Gion is a treasure trove of culture and history. Hanami-koji Street, the district's centerpiece, is lined with preserved buildings housing high-end restaurants, ochaya (teahouses), and shops. Visitors may even glimpse geiko or maiko in their elegant attire, adding to the district's timeless charm.
The quieter Shirakawa area, with its willow-lined canal and refined dining, offers a serene escape. For a deeper cultural experience, attend a maiko-hosted dinner or a traditional arts performance at Gion Corner.
