Sanzenin Temple (三千院), nestled in the serene town of Ohara an hour north of Kyoto, offers a tranquil escape with its expansive grounds, lush moss gardens, and historic buildings. The approach to the temple is a delightful stroll lined with shops and smaller temples, leading visitors to a world of tradition and beauty. Founded by the revered monk Saicho in 804, Sanzenin is a cornerstone of Tendai Buddhism and one of the few temples with head priests from imperial lineage.

Visitors can marvel at the Kyakuden Hall’s stunning calligraphy and the Shuhekien Garden’s picturesque pond. The Shinden Hall offers breathtaking views of the moss garden and the Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, the temple’s oldest building dating back to 985. Amida Buddha and its attendants stand as treasures in this peaceful haven, especially captivating during autumn’s vibrant colors.
