You can reach Takao from central Kyoto by JR buses or Kyoto City Bus. JR buses leave from Kyoto Station every 20–30 minutes, cost 230 yen one way, and take about 50 minutes. You can also board these buses at JR Nijo Station or Ninnaji. They are covered by the Japan Rail Pass and some other JR West passes. Kyoto City Bus number 8 departs from Shijo-Karasuma every 30–60 minutes, costs 230 yen one way, and takes about 45 minutes.

In Takao, buses stop at the Takao bus stop (高雄), which is convenient for visiting Jingoji and Saimyoji Temples, and the Toganoo bus stop (栂ノ尾), which is closest to Kozanji Temple. Some JR buses continue further into the valley beyond Toganoo.
