Sento Palace
The Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace (京都仙洞御所) is a historic residence situated within Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, directly across from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Originally constructed in 1630 as the retirement home of Emperor Gomizuno, it later served as the residence of several retired emperors. Unfortunately, the original palace structures were destroyed by fire in 1854. In 1867, Omiya Palace was built on the same grounds and continues to serve as accommodation for the emperor during his visits to Kyoto.
Today, visitors can explore the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace through a free guided tour organized by the Imperial Household Agency. The tour highlights the elegant strolling gardens, where guests can admire meticulously landscaped paths, seasonal flora, and the serene North and South Ponds. While access to the palace buildings is restricted, visitors can view the exterior of Omiya Palace and peek inside Seikatei, a charming teahouse that reflects refined imperial aesthetics.
