Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station (京都駅), opened in 1997, is a striking modern landmark that contrasts with Kyoto’s traditional image. Built to mark the city’s 1200th anniversary, its futuristic design was created by architect Hara Hiroshi. The station's main hall, known as the Matrix, reflects both Kyoto's street grid and the station's structure. As Kyoto’s transportation hub, it connects JR lines, Kintetsu Railway, and the Karasuma Subway Line, as well as being a bus terminal.
Kyoto Station’s two sides, Karasuma and Hachijo, offer different experiences. The Karasuma side is bustling with access to downtown and attractions like Kyoto Tower, while the quieter Hachijo side leads to Toji Temple and more hotels. Visitors can explore tourist info centers, stores, dining options, and the Granvia Hotel within the station. Facilities include luggage storage and coin lockers, and the building also hosts an art museum and theater.
