Eikando Temple
Eikando (永観堂), also known as Zenrinji Temple, is a renowned Jodo sect temple in northern Kyoto, famous for its vibrant autumn colors and evening illuminations. Originally a Heian-period villa, the temple was converted into a peaceful place of worship in the 11th century. A major highlight is the sideward-facing Amida Buddha statue, linked to a legend of the statue turning its head towards the temple's head priest. Visitors can explore the temple's beautiful buildings, corridors, and tranquil pond garden.
Eikando is especially beautiful in the fall when its autumn colors are illuminated. The temple's main buildings, including the Shakado Hall and Amidado, are connected by wooden corridors, creating a serene atmosphere. A highlight is the two-story Tahoto Pagoda, which offers a stunning view of the temple grounds, especially when the surrounding maple trees are in full color. Don't miss the Hojo Pond, with its peaceful island shrine and stunning fall foliage.
