Pontocho

66 of 75 in attractions in Kyoto

Pontocho (先斗町, Pontochō) is a charming, narrow alley in Kyoto, stretching from Shijo-dori to Sanjo-dori, just west of the Kamogawa River. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, this dining area is lined with various restaurants offering everything from casual yakitori to fine Kyoto cuisine. There are also options for foreign dishes and high-end establishments for those with exclusive access.

Along the eastern side, many restaurants have beautiful views of the Kamogawa River. In the summer, they set up temporary platforms called kawayuka over the river for outdoor dining. This is a popular way to enjoy Kyoto’s traditional dishes while staying cool in the summer. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
