Kyoto Imperial Palace

68 of 75 in attractions in Kyoto

Kyoto Imperial Palace (京都御所, Kyōto Gosho) was once the home of Japan's Imperial Family until 1868, when the capital moved to Tokyo. It sits in the beautiful Kyoto Imperial Park, which also houses the Sento Imperial Palace and other historical sites. The current palace was reconstructed in 1855 after several relocations and fires. It is surrounded by walls and includes gates, halls, and gardens. The Imperial Palace is open to the public for exploration, though the buildings are not accessible.

Kyoto Imperial Park is also home to several attractions, such as the Kaninnomiya Mansion and a small branch of Miyajima’s Itsukushima Shrine. The park is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, with peaceful walking paths, lawns, and groves. In spring, visitors can enjoy the blooming weeping cherry trees by Konoe Pond, which typically flower from late March to mid-April.
