The Historic Village of Hokkaido (開拓の村, Kaitaku no Mura), located on the outskirts of Sapporo, is an open-air museum that showcases about 60 historical buildings from the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868–1926). These buildings represent the time when Hokkaido underwent significant development.

The museum is divided into four sections: a town, fishing village, farm village, and mountain village. Each area offers a unique glimpse into the past, making it an ideal destination for history and culture enthusiasts.

Getting there

The Historic Village of Hokkaido is in Nopporo Forest Park, outside central Sapporo. From Sapporo Station, take a local train to Shinrin Koen Station (15 minutes, 340 yen). From there, take a 5-10 minute bus (240 yen) or walk 20-30 minutes to the open-air museum. Get off at "Kaitaku no mura." Alternatively, you can take the same bus from Shin-Sapporo Station, which adds 10 minutes to the ride. The buses are all heading to "Kaitaku no mura."
