Sugamo (巣鴨), often referred to as the "Old Ladies' Harajuku," is a unique shopping district along Tokyo's Yamanote Line, offering a charming experience catered to the elderly. The 800-meter-long Jizo Dori shopping street is lined with over 200 stores selling traditional clothing, food, and goods tailored for older generations. A standout item is the district’s famous red underwear, believed to bring luck. Sugamo is also famous for its delicious Shio-Daifuku, rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste and salt.

The heart of Sugamo’s popularity lies at Koganji Temple, home to the Arai Kannon statue, known for its healing properties. Visitors queue to wash the statue with small hand towels and press them to their body in hopes of relief. The district becomes especially lively during the small temple festivals held on the 4th, 14th, and 24th of each month. With its blend of healing traditions, lucky charms, and unique shopping, Sugamo offers a distinctly Japanese experience.
