Yushima Seido is a unique shrine dedicated to the Chinese scholar Confucius, located in Tokyo. During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Confucianism was the state philosophy, and the shrine was once part of a Confucian school. Its striking black lacquered buildings create a distinctive and captivating appearance.

The shrine grounds are open daily, allowing visitors to admire the beautiful architecture and a bronze statue of Confucius. The interior of the main hall, however, is only accessible on weekends and national holidays, adding a special element to your visit.

Getting there

Yushima Seido is easily accessible from Yushima Station. Take the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line to Yushima Station, and from there, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the shrine. Alternatively, you can walk from Ueno Station in about 10 minutes.
