Hosokawa Residence
The Former Hosokawa Residence (旧細川刑部邸, Kyū Hosokawa Gyōbutei) is a stunning samurai mansion, once home to a branch family of the powerful Hosokawa Clan, which ruled Kumamoto during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The mansion, a symbol of the era's elite, was moved in 1873 and later restored in the 1990s at Kumamoto Castle Park. Though it was damaged in the 2016 earthquakes and is currently closed, repair works are underway with hopes of reopening by 2030.
Visitors can admire the mansion's architectural beauty and learn about Kumamoto's rich feudal history. Despite the temporary closure, the Former Hosokawa Residence remains a significant cultural landmark, offering a glimpse into the past when it reopens.
