Lafcadio Hearn's former residence is located behind the Tsuruya department store in downtown Kumamoto. The closest tram stop is Suidocho, just a 15-minute, 180 yen ride from Kumamoto Station. From there, it's a 2-minute walk to the residence.

Lafcadio Hearn’s Residence (小泉八雲 熊本旧居) in Kumamoto is the former home of Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), one of the first Western authors to write about Japan. Hearn moved to Japan in 1890 and lived in Kumamoto from 1891 to 1894. His famous works, including Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan and Kwaidan, offer a unique perspective on Japanese culture and folklore.
The residence has been preserved as a museum, showcasing the life and writings of this influential author. Visitors can explore the place where Hearn lived and gain insight into his experiences in Japan.
