Mount Shosha (書写山, Shoshazan), located at the edge of Himeji City, is home to the 1000-year-old Engyoji temple complex. This atmospheric mountain retreat can be reached in 30 minutes from the city center by bus and ropeway. The temple buildings, spread across a dense forest, offer stunning views and a peaceful ambiance. A 10-15 minute walk from the ropeway station takes visitors to the Maniden temple hall, built on pillars on a steep slope.

The mountain also features the Mitsunodo halls and an observation point with panoramic views of Himeji. Known for its beautiful scenery and lack of modern infrastructure, Mount Shosha is a popular filming location, including scenes from the Hollywood movie "The Last Samurai."
