Wakakusayama

14 of 15 in attractions in Nara

Mount Wakakusayama (若草山) is a grassy mountain located behind Nara Park, between Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Shrine. At 350 meters tall, it offers stunning views over Nara City. The mountain is open to hikers year-round, except in winter, with a small entrance fee. In spring, the slopes are lined with cherry trees that bloom in early April, creating a beautiful scene.

A 15-20 minute hike takes you to a plateau with breathtaking views, and an additional 20-30 minutes leads to the summit. Every January, the mountain is set ablaze during the spectacular Wakakusa Yamayaki festival.
