Shin-Yakushiji

Shin-Yakushiji Temple (新薬師寺) is a historic site founded during the Nara Period (710-794) by an empress to help heal an ailing emperor. The temple is dedicated to Yakushi Buddha, the protector of medicine in Japanese Buddhism. The name "Shin-Yakushiji" means "New Yakushi Temple" as it was built to complement the original Yakushiji Temple.

Though much of the original complex is now gone, the main hall (Hondo) remains, housing a 2-meter tall Yakushi Buddha surrounded by 12 life-sized guardian deities. These guardians, made of clay, each hold a different weapon, making the temple a fascinating spot for visitors to explore.
