Gangoji Temple (元興寺) in Nara is one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples, originally founded as Asukadera in Asuka before being relocated in 718. Once part of Nara’s seven great temples, it played a key role in Japan’s early Buddhist history. Although much smaller today, it retains its spiritual significance and historical charm.

Visitors to Gangoji Temple can admire its ancient wooden structures and beautifully preserved roof tiles, some of the oldest in Japan. This quiet, atmospheric site offers a glimpse into Nara’s rich past and is a must-visit for history and culture enthusiasts.
